Bible Question:
I was recently reading through Ephesians and had a blessed time, only running into difficulty with this particular verse. Am I to understand that God’s intent for the church is that we make known His manifold wisdom to angels? Or is it to earthly rulers? Any insight on this verse would be greatly appreciated. I know it has noting to do with my salvation or relationship with Jesus; it is simply an honest inquiry for better understanding. Eph. 3:10 |
Bible Answer: Everything that God does serves the purpose to bring glory to Himself. (This may sound to our ears as being conceited or egomaniacal, but God is the only one who truly and accurately understands His own worth. He esteems Himself with perfect correctness, something that no other creature can do.) Remember that Ephesians begins by Paul painting an awesome picture of God's eternal purpose (Ephesians 3:11). So, what is the purpose of the church -- the universal, invisible body of Christ? It is to bring Him glory (Eph 1:12), moving right along the same lines of His own purpose. In addition, we are to enjoy His fellowship forever (Eph 2:7). (That verse always boggles my mind!) To this end God has eliminated two great obstacles in the way of our unity with Him: (1) He has made that which was dead, alive (Eph 2:1); and (2) He has brought that which was far off, together (Eph 2:13). So together we are being built up into a great and perfect temple in which God will dwell forever (Eph 2:20-22). Incredible, isn't it? No wonder Paul seems to run out of superlatives as he writes, often lapsing into prayers of praise! I hope that helps a bit. In Him, Doc Oh... By the way, the last three chapters of Ephesians has over 30 imperative statements, while the first three has none. Why is that? I believe it is because the practical is not possible without a clear understanding of the theology. The lesson for me, then, is never look too quickly for practical application until you are well founded in the theology. The practical stuff flows naturally out of an understanding of the theology, but doing the reverse leads only to frustration. |
