NASB | Galatians 5:4 You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Galatians 5:4 You have been severed from Christ, if you seek to be justified [that is, declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty, and placed in right standing with God] through the Law; you have fallen from grace [for you have lost your grasp on God's unmerited favor and blessing]. |
Bible Question: Who is Paul talking to here? ARe they nonbelivers or believers? |
Bible Answer: Hi Jeannie, The verse you refer to, Gal. 5:4 is, I believe , oft misunderstood and interpreted. With that said, Paul is clearly addressing believers. In Gal. 1:2, the salutation is to "and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia:" The point of verse 4 can best be understood by the entire context of Galatians, but certainly the more immediate context of 5:1-3: 1 "It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. 2 Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law." I hope this helps, BradK |
