Bible Question: I would like to know what the bible says about praying for the dead. I thought I had read a scripture that said it was good to do so. I have been teaching a boys Sunday school class and one of our youg boys wanted to know if it would help to pray for a young unsaved friend who had been killed in an accident. |
Bible Answer: Suzy: I do not believe that the Bible teaches prayers for the dead. The Lord Jesus said, The Son of Man hath power on earth to forgive sins" Matt. 9:6 It touches our heart when children are affected by death of a mate. It would be wonderful to be able to give hope or help to one who has passed into eternity. However, at this point it is in God's hands and he knows those that are his. As I am sure you are aware, King David's son Absalom tried to take his father's throne and was killed in the attempt. We hear the sorrow of a grieving father as he thinks of his adult son who has died and gone into eternity. He cryed "O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son! King David was right with God and was wishing to exchange places with his son. This was a prayer which could never be answered. This is my humble opinion and in light of the Word of God, that we have a responsibilty to be honest and faithful with our young people. They need of know of God's love, of God's eternal Son who payed that awful debt on the cross that we could be forgiven and that it is God's desire that we come to know him through Christ when we are young. Jesus said "Suffer the children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such are the kingdom of heaven. I think the lesson each one of us should see in death, is that we cannot live forever and that we must prepare to meet God. Praying for someone whose eternal destiny is fixed, would be futile. However, we should pray for the living who are entrusted to us. When I was a young boy we used to sing this song which spoke to my heart. "Ive a soul to be saved, May this truth be engraved, On my mind and my soul while I'm young, O how awful the cost if my soul should be lost, And in hell if I die as I am. May God bless you in your Sunday School class. Robert |
