AMPLIFIED 2015 | 2 Corinthians 3:6 He has qualified us [making us sufficient] as ministers of a new covenant [of salvation through Christ], not of the letter [of a written code] but of the Spirit; for the letter [of the Law] kills [by revealing sin and demanding obedience], but the Spirit gives life. Bible Question:
What is the new covenant that we are made ministers of? What is 'the letter?' Vs. 7 - What is 'the ministry of death?' Vs. 9 - What is 'the ministry of condemnation?' Vs. 11 - What fades away? Please use scripture to support your answer. |
Bible Answer: What is the new covenant that we are made ministers of? ... The new covenant was promised in the OT (Jer 31:31-34), that the Law would be on our minds and written on our hearts (vs 33), we will know the Lord better (vs 34). It is sealed by His death "blood" (Luk 22:20). Also read Heb 8:6, 9:15 and the context. What is 'the letter?' ... The letter is the Law (Rom 7:6). The verse uses the comparision with the Spirit. Note the Law did not kill, nor does the Scripture. It points out that death is the punishment for sin. Vs. 7 - What is 'the ministry of death?' ...The ministry of death is the 10 Commandments (vs 7). Exodus 34:29-35 describes this verse. It was the basis of the other Laws, which described death. Vs. 9 - What is 'the ministry of condemnation?' ...The ministry of condemnation points back to the ministry of death (vs 7). Also read Leviticus 27:15-26. Vs. 11 - What fades away? The old Mosaic covenant is fading away. Read 3:7-18 to see the comparisons. Steve |
