NASB | 2 Corinthians 10:12 ¶ For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 2 Corinthians 10:12 ¶ We do not have the audacity to put ourselves in the same class or compare ourselves with some who [supply testimonials to] commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they lack wisdom and behave like fools. |
Subject: How to Understand andApply this Passage? |
Bible Note: Dear Quumoh, You wrote, "That doesn't mean he condoned such..." (sic) Nor does it mean that he was trying to establish a classless society. I can see why you are interpreting the verse in this fashion. Taken out of context, that does appear to be what it saying. We need to be extremely careful about context (see post #156918 and #158836). Paul is speaking of his own authority to instruct and rebuke (2 Corinthians 10:1-9), responding to the false teachers who make the objections in v10. Read this statement in the context of the whole chapter. Avoid error by reading every verse in the context of a passage, and every passage in the context of a chapter, and every chapter in the context of the book. In Him, Doc |
