Subject: Logical Order of Decrees of God |
Bible Note: The following is from Robert L. Reymond's "A New Systematic Theology of the Christian Faith," 1998. The following schemes are attempts to understand the logical order of God's decrees in His eternal plan of salvation. As I said in a previous post, think of them as having a logical order, not a chronological order. His decrees would have been, necessarily, "before" time was created. These schemes were not really articulated as such until the sixteenth century. That written, the Arminian scheme was implied by Pelegius and the Supralapsarian scheme was implied by St. Augustine. I've used leading zeros to number the decrees with the exception of election. It seems significant that election moves "upward" in each scheme. Arminian Scheme: 01. Decree to create the world and all men 02. Decree that all men should fall 03. Decree to redeem all men by the cross work of Christ 04. Decree to apply Christ's redemptive benefits to all men E5. Election of those who believe in Christ (reprobation of others) Almyraldian Scheme: 01 Decree to create the world and all men 02. Decree that all men should fall 03. Decree to redeem all men by cross work of Christ E4. Election of some fallen men to salvation in Christ (reprobation of others) 05. Decree to apply Christ's redemptive benefits to the elect Infralapsarian Scheme: 01. Decree to create the world and all men 02. Decree that all men would fall E3. Election of some fallen men to salvation in Christ (reprobation of others) 04. Decree to redeem the elect by the cross work of Christ 05. Decree to apply Christ's redemptive benefits to the elect Supralapsarian Scheme (Traditional): E1. Election of some men to salvation in Christ (reprobation of others) 02. Decree to create the world and both kinds of men 03. Decree that all men would fall 04. Decree to redeem the elect, who are now sinners, by the cross work of Christ 05. Decree to apply Christ's redemptive benefits to these elect sinners Supralapsarian Scheme (Teleological): E1. Election of some sinful men to salvation in Christ (reprobation of the rest of sinful mankind in order to make known the riches of God's gracious mercy to the elect) 02. Decree to apply Christ's redemptive benefits to the elect sinners 03. Decree to redeem the elect sinners by the cross work of Christ 04. Decree that men should fall 05. Decree to create the world and men In Him, Doc |
