1 Corinthians 14:5 Now I wish that all of you spoke in unknown tongues, but even more [I wish] that you would prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater [and more useful] than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he translates or explains [what he says], so that the church may be edified [instructed, improved, strengthened]. |
Bible Question: Why are there no prophets in today's world? Many people seem to say that the reason is because we have the Bible now and no longer need prophets. However, 1 Corinthians 14:5 seems to me to suggest the gift of prophesy should still be possible. By the way, who was the last prophet mentioned in the Bible? |
Bible Answer: hello Nathan If you notice in 1 Corinthians Paul is speaking to the Christians in Corinth, about spiritual gifts these Christians were coveting the gift of Tongues so Paul is telling them that the gift of Prophesy was the greater gift. So Prophesy was active at that time. but the written Word was not available to them then. Notice in 1 Corinthians 13:8,10 8 Love never fails ; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away ; if there are tongues, they will cease ; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part ; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away the Perfect being the word. ( Jesus was perfect and he was the word) So all spiritual gifts ceased at that time. As far as the last prophet goes I don't have a clue. Only Prophets now are false prophets. Thank You fmp |
