NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:5 Now I wish that all of you spoke in unknown tongues, but even more [I wish] that you would prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater [and more useful] than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he translates or explains [what he says], so that the church may be edified [instructed, improved, strengthened]. |
Bible Question: Why are there no prophets in today's world? Many people seem to say that the reason is because we have the Bible now and no longer need prophets. However, 1 Corinthians 14:5 seems to me to suggest the gift of prophesy should still be possible. By the way, who was the last prophet mentioned in the Bible? |
Bible Answer: I meant to add this morning also. I believe there are valid prophets that haven't allowed their ministry to be destroyed by fame or fortune. The way to tell a true prophet is when his prophecy comes to fruition exactly has was prophesied and the prophecy stayed within the boundaries already established by scripture. Only false prophesy will stray outside the boundaries of scripture. Most prophets move and function outside the notice of those that would innocently and unintentionally deflect their ministry by bringing fame or notoriety to them. |
