NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:5 Now I wish that all of you spoke in unknown tongues, but even more [I wish] that you would prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater [and more useful] than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he translates or explains [what he says], so that the church may be edified [instructed, improved, strengthened]. |
Bible Question: Why are there no prophets in today's world? Many people seem to say that the reason is because we have the Bible now and no longer need prophets. However, 1 Corinthians 14:5 seems to me to suggest the gift of prophesy should still be possible. By the way, who was the last prophet mentioned in the Bible? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Nathan... I meant to add this morning that there are, prophets today. This should not surprise us, since Christ and the apostles warned us that they would come (Matthew 7:15; Acts 20:29; Jude 4-8; 2 Timothy 4:3; 2 Peter 2:1). We are to judge every spirit (1 John 4:1). The way we do this is by careful comparison with the Word of God (Hebrews 1:1-2). You will notice is that every one of the false teachers will insist that you need something extra in addition to the Word of God; that Scripture is not all sufficient; that something else has equivalent authority or greater authority than Scripture; that God has something new to say; etc. etc. "Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit." (Matthew 7:15-18 NASB) Fortunately, the Lord God has given us His Word by which we may know Him and know our own spirit and the spirit of others. In Him, Doc |
