NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:5 Now I wish that all of you spoke in unknown tongues, but even more [I wish] that you would prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater [and more useful] than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he translates or explains [what he says], so that the church may be edified [instructed, improved, strengthened]. |
Bible Question: Why are there no prophets in today's world? Many people seem to say that the reason is because we have the Bible now and no longer need prophets. However, 1 Corinthians 14:5 seems to me to suggest the gift of prophesy should still be possible. By the way, who was the last prophet mentioned in the Bible? |
Bible Answer: Nathan who says there aren't prophets today? I think there are and as this gifting is realized by others, their walk with God is derailed by the notoriety that is forced upon them. It is impossible to stay in the desert and eat locust when everyone and his brother wants you on their TV program or radio show. Can you imagine Moses after the burning bush in today's setting. Moses would never have had time to lead the Children of Israel out of Egypt because of the TV, Radio and Book signing events. |
