Bible Answer: Hi Edwin, I would like to add a slightly larger context to this discussion, if I may. Paul has been writing about the spiritual gifts. Chapter 12 verse 7 is what I believe to be a key verse in this discussion. "But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good." Romans 12 takes this same viewpoint, that God gives spiritual abilities to us so that using those abilities we can serve each other. Paul then teaches concerning these gifts, but then he takes it to the next level. He says, desire the greater gifts, but I show you a more excellent way. No matter what gift I have, without love, it's meaningless. Love in the main thing. The gifts are incomplete, and when the complete is come (compare to Eph. 4:1-16), the fully matured and finished body of Christ, these incomplete gifts will be done away with, but love will remain. For we know (word of knowledge) in part, and we prophesy (gift of prophecy) in part, but when that which is perfect (teleios - having reach its end - finished - complete) is come, that which is in part will be done away. You want to prophesy, you want word of knowledge. These are more, shall I say, flamboyant than, say, the gift of helps. Its good to want gifts that edify the body, but its far better that you should love. These gifts will pass away, but love never fails. So seek foremost to love, but also desire the spiritual gifts (14:1), as the tools to put action into your love. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
