Bible Question: 1 cor 12:23. what does it mean? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Mama Grace, 1 Corinthians 12:23 "and those members of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor, and our less presentable members become much more presentable," (NASB) Here is a bit of commentary regarding this verse: "12:23 those members of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor. Just as we give food to the stomach, though it is a less attractive part of the body, so we should give honor and support to the Christians in the church who have ordinary gifts (in their functions). our less presentable members become much more presentable. Christians whose functions may be very obscure in the church are to be given special respect." (1) 12:12-26: "..The image of a body is introduced to explain Christ's relationship with believers (12). Verse 13 applies this model to the church: by baptism all, despite diversity of ethnic or social origins, are integrated into one organism. Verses 14-26 then develop the need for diversity of function among the parts of a body without threat to its unity." (2) When thinking about this verse, I remember my days while a student at Indiana Wesleyan University and serving as a janitor for small wages at Lakeview Christian Church in Marion, Indiana. Even though I was not an invited speaker, a pastor, or even a teacher, I knew as I spent many a Saturday afternoon there that people needed the chairs to sit on and the tables to use in Sunday school the following morning, and that the church appreciated my help and service to them even though the janitorial duties (and the cleaning of the gym after basketball games and the cleaning of the restrooms) was a necessary service that one at times did not look forward to doing. But putting this verse in the context of the duties of a teenager who possibly babysits or does some of the menial duties I mentioned above: your service, no matter how little, does not go unnoticed and unappreciated by the Lord! "For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward." (Mark 9:41) I pray that even those menial activities are done with praise: "Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father." (Colossians 3:17) Blessings to you, Makarios (1) Zondervan NASB Study Bible, pg. 1679, copyright 1999 Zondervan Corporation (2) Saint Joseph Edition of The New American Bible, pg. 258, copyright 1992 by Catholic Book Publishing Corp |
