Bible Note: Proffitt_79: Perhaps your choice of phrase did not do justice to your meaning when you wrote, "...no matter what doctrine one ascribes to, the absolute most important thing is one's spiritual walk and relationship with Jesus Christ." ..... I submit for your consideration that sound doctrine is a sine qua non, without which it is impossible even to define a relationship with Jesus Christ, let alone have one. The apostle Paul is very clear about the importance of sound doctrine, a word that is synonymous with teaching. Gal. 1:8: "But even if we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed (Gr. anathema)." ..... 2 Tim. 4:3: "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers, and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables." ..... 1 Tim. 6:20,21: "O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge -- by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith." ..... 2 Tim. 4:1,2: "I charge you...Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, will all longsuffering and teaching (doctrine)." ..... 2 Tim. 3:16: "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God (God-breathed) and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." ..... 1 Tim. 4:8,9 "If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed. But reject profane and old wives' fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness." ..... Concerning false doctrine, our Lord said to the messenger of the church in Pergamos, "But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality. Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth." (Rev. 2:14-16). There are many more biblical references to the importance of sound doctrine and the dire consequences of false doctrine besides the few that I've quoted here in this post. Clearly, Scripture prizes sound doctrine and emphasizes its importance; and it as clearly condemns false doctrine and points out its pitfalls. It does matter a great deal what doctrine one subscribes to, embraces, bases his faith and witness on, and teaches to others. ..... The book of Romans is the Magna Carta of Christianity. It is doctrine, doctrine, doctrine. The New Testament is doctrine -- the doctrine of Jesus Christ. We cannot read the Bible without being confronted with its doctrine. We cannot escape doctrine. Indeed, we dare not try to escape it! Doctrine is teaching. Biblical doctrine is sound teaching. And how we need to be taught! --Hank |
