Subject: communion: symbolic or something more? |
Bible Note: Money in any form -- cash, checks, bonds, stocks, treasury notes -- is a symbol. It will not buy anything until it is offered by the buyer and accepted by the vendor. It will not pay any debt until it is offered by the debtor and accepted by the creditor. When a car dealer accepts cash for a car, the cash does not become the car. The cash is merely the medium of exchange, the symbol, as it were, of the valuation placed on the car. When followers of Christ partake of the fruit of the vine and the bread in communion in a worthy manner, Christ accepts these symbols of rembrance of His body and His blood that He shed on the cross. They are in a certain sense "legal tender" but retain their original properties and do not become transubstantial any more than cash becomes a car when it is offered and accepted as a medium of exchange. --Hank |
