AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 7:6 But now we have been released from the Law and its penalty, having died [through Christ] to that by which we were held captive, so that we serve [God] in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter [of the Law]. |
Bible Question: Ok, can some one explain to me what true legatlism is? And where I can find examples of it in the bible. I think that we as christians have scewed the definition a bit. So what is the heart of legalism? |
Bible Answer: Legalism is not a word found in the Bible that I know of. It is nevertheless a biblical topic. The effort of men to be declared justified by the works of the Law is spoken of at length by Paul. Legalism is a difficult word to define in a short sentence or two, but I will try to do so and then give the scriptures that tell me this. In my opinion and I am sure that I have not fully defined it by saying this: Legalism is that attempt by man to appease his smitten guilty conscious with a religious effort of some type that takes many forms but all have this same objective which is to relieve the conscious even if the relief is only temporary. Isaiah 28:9-13 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. |
