Bible Question: Jesus tells the lawyer before he tells the story of the Good Semaritan that he has eternal life if he loves God, loves his neighbor and loves himself. Is this correct? If this is correct, is there any difference between this eternal life guaranteed to us and the "everlasting life" guaranteed to us in John 3:16 and John 5:24? |
Bible Answer: Love is one of the evidences of genuine saving faith. Love is a natural result of being saved. Notice love is the RESULT, not the CAUSE, of salvation. "Salvation is conditioned solely on faith in Jesus Christ. Nearly 200 times faith, or belief, is stated as the single condition in the NT [for salvation]" (p. 1882, Ryrie Study Bible, Moody Press, 1976, 1978) . . . This is not meant to negate such Scriptures as 1 John 4:7-8 and related passages. To love God and to love one's neighbor as himself are the greatest COMMANDMENTS. Note that Jesus said if we loved him we would keep his commandments. A true statement -- no doubt about it! But notice, we are not saved by keeping his commandments. See Rom 3:28; Eph 2:8-9, etc. Instead we are saved BY grace THROUGH faith PLUS nothing. Or, we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. To espouse any other way of salvation is to preach "another gospel" and "another Jesus." Also, if you look up the words in any English dictionary, I believe you will find that the words eternal and everlasting both mean THE SAME THING. |
