Bible Question: What does it mean to be circumcised of the heart? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Shpagach, Rom 2:29 "But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God." Phil 3:3 "for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh," Col 2:11 "and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ;" If we do a study on these three passages of Scripture, we can get a grasp of what it means to be "circumcised of the heart." After reading Romans 2:29, 'circumcision' in this passage represents a life that is separated from the flesh and unto God (compare verse 27). See also Deut. 10:16, and Jeremiah 4:4. In Deut. 10:16, "circumcision" is implied as 'a separation from sin.' This meaning is also carried over into Jeremiah 4:4, where we add "purification" to "separation." Deut. 30:6 speaks of why God would "circumcise us in heart." Ezekiel 44:7 makes a clear distinction between being circumcised in the flesh and being circumcised in heart. Philippians 3:3 states that we are the "True" circumcision, putting no confidence in the flesh. Please compare this with Genesis 17:9-14, which gives instruction on what fleshly circumcision entails. In Gen. 17:9-14, God makes circumcision a 'sign' of His covenant with Abraham (see Rom. 4:11). For a Hebrew to refuse circumcision would be to excise himself from the community (v. 14). Therefore, should a believer refuse to repent and put away the sins of the flesh, then he is, in fact, rejecting the "true" circumcision that should take place in his heart (Romans 6:1-3). Colossians 2:11 states that we were also circumcised with a 'circumcision made without hands.' This circumcision, made without hands, (again, compare with Gen. 17:9-14), removes the body of the flesh- the old sinful nature, which is corrupt (Romans 3:1-19), is removed from us, so that we don't have to fall prey and indulge in it anymore. This type of circumcision illustrates that the removal of sin from our hearts is accomplished by a spiritual circumcision that occurs when we are baptized by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5,8; 2:38; 4:31; Rom. 15:13; 1 Cor. 6:11; Titus 3:5). Hebrews 9:14 "How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?"
