Bible Question:
I first read this verse from a NIV version, and also a NIRV version, I get different meanings from ever version I read. the NIRV (New International Readers Version reads this, Some people do not know God's law when they sin. They will not be judged by the law when they die. Others do know God's law when they sin. They will be judged by the law. It is also very similar in the NIV version. To me, this would first mean, That those who don't know the bible's law's, will not be judged by them. To me that sounds like if you don't know its wrong by the bible, then you won't be judged for that. Meaning you can still be saved. But to read it from this site from the NASB and amplified, i sorta take it like, if you don't know the law, you will die w/o the law. Meaning you will die lost. What is the true meaning of this ? and can you see how I could be misguided by the various versions? i'm very new to reading the bible, and trying to understand it and live my life by it, but am struggling with what version to use that I can still easily understand and is the most inspired. |
Bible Answer: Greetings and welcome to the forum! First let me say that for new Christians I like to recommend the God's Word translation. It is much easier to understand or at least to refer to when you are reading another version and don't understand what you are reading. As for Romas 2:12: John Gills Exposition on the Bible puts it this way " For as many as have sinned without law,.... This is an instance of the strict justice of God, and proves him to be no respecter of persons; for the Gentiles, who were "without law", the written law of Moses, not without the law of nature in their breasts, nor without some civil laws and statutes of their own; inasmuch as they "sinned" against the God of nature, and the law and light of nature". There are many people who have never heard the Word of Jesus and do not know His laws. They shall be judged on more or less their morals and how they conducted themselves. On the other hand those who have had access to the Word and God's laws will be held accountable for their greater knowledge. In other words we are not held accountable for God's laws that we do not know. We will be judged on our hearts. However, if we have heard the law we will be held in higher accountability. prayon |
