Bible Question: WHAT IS THE MEANING OF VERSES 6 AND 7 IN ROMANS CHAPTER 10? |
Bible Answer: Emmaus is correct in pointing out that Paul is quoting Deuteronomy 30:11-14. Moses, in the last days of his life, reiterated the law to the children of Israel (that's what "deuteronomy" means, second law). In so doing, Moses assures them that his commands are "reasonable, plain, intelligible, and accessible." They didn't require some kind of pain-staking research or sweat-breaking toil. They did't require diving deep into the sea or climbing the tallest mountain to find some kind of profound mystery. Back in ancient times it wasn't uncommon for philosophers or legislators to travel long distances to some place far away to obtain knowledge. By contrast, the Law of Moses is immediate, it doesn't have to be brought from far away. Paul isn't saying that Moses describes the righteousness of faith or justification of faith alone. Moses had the objective of setting forth the law of God and their consequences and benefits. Nevertheless, Paul realized that although Moses didn't describe these things, the language he uses do not contradict them, but rather are availble for their description. As John Gill puts it, "The scheme of justification by faith alone is here personified, as if it were living and describing its own effects and nature. One describing it would say, Or the plan itself speaks in this manner." |
