Bible Question:
I thought I had this straight, but now I'm confused again. If 'poneria' was accidently read as 'porneia', why do both words appear in the late dated manuscripts? (4202, then 4189) |
Bible Answer: Greetings PJG! It depends! The particular variant is rated a C reading, which simply means that no one is really sure. There are three possibilities. 1) The word 'porneia' could have been dropped accidently. But, the fact that 'porneia' only appears in later manuscripts make this very unlikely. 2) The word 'porneia' could have been added accidently in some manuscripts when 'poneria' was mistakenly read as 'porneia'. 3) The word 'porneia' could have been deliberately added when copyists found the word in some manuscripts. The most likely answer is a combination of 2 and 3. The word was added by mistake in some manuscripts and then added deliberately in others. Why are both words in the later manuscripts? This is called conflation. For instance, a scribe might be copying a manuscript which did not include 'porneia', but remembered it being in another manuscripte and simply added it. Thus, both words were included. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
