Bible Question: Why was Paul the Apostle's name changed from Saul? |
Bible Answer: The apostle Paul was known by both the Hebrew name "Saul" and the Roman name "Paul" from childhood; this apostle may have chosen to go by his Roman name in view of his commission to declare the good news to the Gentiles (non-Jews). Compare these two: (Acts 9:17; 2Pet 3:15) The Apostle Paul is referred to as Saul in Act 9:17 "And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, [even] Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost."... and as Paul in 2 Pet 3:15 "And account [that] the longsuffering of our Lord [is] salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; " |
