NASB | Acts 6:1 Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 6:1 Now about this time, when the number of disciples was increasing, a complaint was made by the Hellenists (Greek-speaking Jews) against the [native] Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food. |
Bible Question: Why were the Hellenistic widows ignored? Was that a language barrier or a minority discrimination? |
Bible Answer: Hellenistic Jews were considered inferior to Hebrew Jews (if I may use that term). They most often spoke Koine Greek instead of Hebrew. They weren’t considered "real" Jews but rather as Jews that succumbed to the invading cultures. |
