Bible Question: Why would the angel tell the imprisioned Apostles to speak the "whole message?" From the preceding verses, it appears (to me) that perhaps the people were focused on temporal things and not the spiritual healing that takes place in Christ. Are there any other indications from this passage in Acts 5 that the "whole message" was being missed? |
Bible Answer: Good observation, Mom... They were being freed to preach the entire gospel message. As John Gill says, "all the doctrines of the Gospel; none of them are to be dropped or concealed, but to be spoken out, fully, freely, and faithfully, with all boldness and constancy." There had been resistance to the gospel. Some had come just to see the spectacle, driven by a desire to see something novel. The high priest and his family had their own reasons for resisting this message. The apostles were not being released in order to secure their safety or freedom, but to continue the task for which Christ had chosen them: the communication of the Gospel to a lost world. I don't think there is any indication that the apostles had fallen short before. Perhaps it was stated this way as a reminder. Maybe it was encouragement for what they were about to face. In verses 29 through 32 they render a complete and full rendition of the gospel, not even losing that chance to get it proclaimed. |
