NASB | Acts 27:28 They took soundings and found it to be twenty fathoms; and a little farther on they took another sounding and found it to be fifteen fathoms. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 27:28 So they took soundings [using a weighted line] and found [the depth to be] twenty fathoms (120 feet); and a little farther on they sounded again and found [the depth to be] fifteen fathoms (90 feet). |
Bible Question: How did these ancient sailors take "soundings?" I was reading this chapter to my family last night, and my children asked me what "soundings" were. I told them that in modern times, it is sonar that calculates how deep the ocean is where you are. But, I could not explain how they would have done this in Bible times besides maybe letting down an anchor. But if this is true, then why does it say "soundings?" |
Bible Answer: I believe they used a weighted line ... as they did during Mark Twain's day. http://www.pbs.org/riverofsong/teachers/ext2.html Use a search engine and enter "weighted line" soundings |
