Bible Question (short): Help... |
Question (full): I am studying 2 Kings 2, the questions already posted are interesting, but I have more. The following was posted at Carm.org I will be teaching a seminar to a large youth group this month. The topic will be on how the youth need to take what God has given to them, and accomplish His will for their lives, using 2 Kings 2-Elisha as the core scripture. Anything you have to offer in the way of history, or spiritual wisdom would be appreciated. Thank you. Why did God send Elijah to Beth-el, Jericho, and Jordan? Is this Jordan the country? or the valley of Jordan? Where is that? It must be close to Jericho, right? What is the point of Elijah telling Elisha to tarry at each place? And why didn't he? Why was Elisha's request a hard thing? Why a chariot of fire? And what are horses of fire? What is the whirlwind? Why did Elisha ask where is the Lord God of Elijah? Why was Elisha ashamed? Why did Elisha tell them to put salt in the cruse, and then do it himself? I just don't understand verses 23-25 at all. some of the questions that I posted. Wycliffe says that Gilgal, Beth-el, and Jericho represent three institutions of the prophets, and that Elijah was presenting to the prophets Elisha his replacement. He also states that "...hold ye your peace..." means "yield to God's will"; the mantle is a symbol of prophetic office and God's power; Elisha by receiving a double blessing is in essence Elijah's firstborn (Deut. 21:17); "a hard thing" represents something that Elijah could not give; a whirlwind is a storm with dark clouds and lightning; the firey chariot and horses represent God's power in battle; Elijah did not actually ascend in the chariot; and Wycliffe sites Jeremiah 2:6-8 to point out that Elisha's question was not one without faith, but rather with faith. I have more questions: How much time passed after Elisha began to follow Elijah? and what works of Jehova through Elijah did Elisha witness? I find it wonderful that Elijah left earth at the Jordan river. Any comments, any interest, please don't post another site unless it really has answers to my questions. I would rather dialogue, and discover what wisdom God has given you personally through your study. If you do have a point of interest for study though don't be bashful. Thank you. By the way, I still don't really get verses 23-35. Points for comment... 1. Elisha's ministry began at the ascension of Elijah...compare to the church... 2. Elisha the firstborn of Elijah...compare to the church... 3. Gilgal - the place of Izrael's circumcision... 4. Elisha wrestled for his blessing, in that he refused to leave Elijah, compare to Jacob... 5. After Christ's ascesion the Holy Spirit came with a sound like a mighty wind, and tounges like fire, and his ascension was in the clouds... 6. The prophets looked for Elijah for three days, compare to time in the tomb... 7. Elijah's ascesion was seen of 50 prophets, compare to the witnesses of Christ's resurrection... What do you think...Does this passage speak to the relationship between Christ and the church? For further study consider the differences in the characteristics of Elijah and his ministry, and that of Elisha and his... |
