Bible Question: Part of the governmental set up of the church is the office of the elder, bishop, pastor or overseer. These terms all interchage. My question is why do most churches not fill this office in accordance with the written word? Notice the above scripture shows this position as plural. There are also other examples in the bible that show this position to be plural. So why do most churches just have the "one" elder, pastor, overseer and then have a multiple of deacons under him? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Raven! Part of the problem, I believe, is that Scripture does not give a detailed structure and job responsiblity listing. This is evidence that the structure was not as important as being faithful to Christ. We know that Paul, and the other Apostles appointed, elders for each church. And, that these elders were responsible for a wide range of duties. But, nothing is spelled out in detail. I believe the structure can and will change over time. The important thing is that we are faithful to Scripture and accountable to Christ! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
