Bible Question: In Acts 13:9 the name Paul is used for the first time to refer to Saul of Tarsus. Afterwards, he is always called Paul. What was the reason for this name change? Dooes it have any special meaning? Do we know? --Hank |
Bible Answer: Greetings, One commentary I consulted (The Bible Knowledge Commentary) suggested that Paul is used from this point on because it is at this point that Paul steps into a leadership position in the mission to the Gentiles. Paul was Saul's Roman name. Paul himself only uses Saul when he refers back to his prior life (Acts 22:7, 26:14). Other than that, I haven't heard of any significant reason for the change in names.
