AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 1:3 To these [men] He also showed Himself alive after His suffering [in Gethsemane and on the cross], by [a series of] many infallible proofs and unquestionable demonstrations, appearing to them over a period of forty days and talking to them about the things concerning the kingdom of God. |
Bible Question: Two questions. (1) What are the things Jesus talked to disciples concerning the kingdom of God? (2) Jesus talked about them for forty days (a long period of time). But why doesn't the New Testament have the details? Thank you in advance. God bless! |
Bible Answer: Apparently since we're not given the details as you've already confirmed, we're left to assume a lot. I like to assume the rest of the New Testament IS and DOES contain those details, at least as much of the details as we need. Remember these were Jesus' final words to His beloved disciples and He knew they would share the wonderful news to the whole world. BUT also remember at least the reaction of some or maybe even most of them. Acts 1:6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “LORD, WILL YOU AT THIS TIME RESTORE THE KINGDOM TO ISRAEL?” 7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” The verse in caps is my idea for emphasis. We must remember these simple, common and un-schooled men didn't have a clear concept of what the Lord's kingdom looked like and apparently they weren't ready to understand it even if He tried to tell them or teach them. They were still looking for an earthly kingdom with Israel in the lead if not in exclusive possession. They didn't get the details of the interview between Christ and Pilate until after John was inspired by the Holy Spirit to recite it for us. Jn 18:33 Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?” 36 Jesus answered, “MY KINGDOM IS NOT OF THIS WORLD. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; BUT NOW MY KINGDOM IS NOT FROM HERE.” More Caps for emphasis. But Jesus does remind them of the coming age of power with the "Comforter" as He predicted earlier. I'm afraid none of us can possibly know for certain the answers to your questions but I am quite certain God has given us everything we need and the rest will just have to wait until after Judgment Day. All of us will have to be patient. But you have posed some very good, thought provoking questions. One last thought/reminder: Jn 21:24 This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true. 25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen. I'm also anxiously looking forward to see what others on the Forum might think of your questions and their responses. God bless, Inquisitor |
