Subject: Where in Acts does it say that? |
Bible Note: Hi Bible Thumper, I can see where speaking in tongues occurred in Act 2, Pentacost, Acts 10, Cornelius, and Acts 19, the Ephesian disciples, but I do not see that the Bible says speaking in tongues occurred in Acts 8, Simon the Sorcerer. Therefore, we can only speculate what Simon saw. It may have been tongues, but is could have been something else. That being true, we cannot say that everytime the Holy Spirit was given, tongues were also given. We simply don't know that as a fact. Why do you suppose the Holy Spirit chose not to tell us what it was exactly that Simon saw? Also, the Ephesian disciples were disciples of John, not Jesus, until Paul preached Jesus to them. Belief in John the Baptist certainly was not enough, as John had said, "I must decrease, and He must increase". But if tongues were truly the "outward sign" of being filled with the Holy Spirit, Paul must not have understood that. In 1 Cor 14 Paul treats tongues as a lesser gift. He would rather we prophesy. But if speaking in tongues was the indicater of having the Holy Spirit, how could we prophesy without the Holy Spirit, which, if we didn't speak in tongues, we didn't have? Paul should have written, instead, if you don't speak in tongues, you need to be filled with the Holy Spirit. But he didn't. He just said, not everybody speaks in tongues. He went on to say, better to prophesy. You don't have to hear this from me, after all, I don't speak in tongues. :-) But check what I've said against the Bible. Love in Christ, Mark |
