Bible Question:
Hello all, I'm new to the forum and I've been reading a lot concerning Calvinism and Aminianism. Since there has been a lot of discussion on these men, I have recently looked into it in an attempt to educate myself on their works. As far as TULIP goes, I don’t agree with all of that nor do I agree with all of what the Arminianist says regarding it. This is just my view from reading off of different websites that explained each view. I have no less than 3 commentaries (Matthew Henry, Matthew Poole and a couple others) that I read and when studying a certain subject or book, I add a few more books to get a wide variety of views on the subject that I can compare with my own. I do not agree 100 percent with what any one particular person says. In explaining things of the Bible to people I will sometimes quote what another has written only because he explains it a little better. I'm just trying to get a handle on this whole debate. I just think that time would be best spent in studying the Bible, and the life of Jesus, how he wants us to live, things of that nature, and not constantly debating the works of Calvin and Arminian. My question is this and not meant to offend anyone but is it not dangerous to put so much emphasis on any Man’s doctrines, to follow them so faithfully and blindly, to just quote what these people have to say and call it gospel? Again, this is not meant as an attack on anyone individual, just my observation as a newcomer to the Forum Thanks for your time, Peace and Joy in Jesus bgg |
Bible Answer: Child, Thanks for initiating some interesting and welcomed discussion on this subject. I too am being led by the Holy spirit in the study of God's word to consider this very vexing issue. For me it all boils down to a single verse of scripture where I think the trail I am walking ends. John 6:65 where our Lord says that "For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father." I noticed that it says no one CAN come to me... If it said no one WILL come to me then I might reach a different conclusion. Of course, there is a host of other scripture that are supportive of this thought process and I am not just basing my opinion on a single verse. The remaining question then is can someone once "drawn" by the Father NOT answer His call. Can a human resist the Almighty? My guess is that we can't, but until I continue my study and back up my thoughts with scripture, I will withhold opinion/belief. The entire discussion (it's not an argument for me) does not in any way change the fact that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior and I cannot be saved ANY OTHER WAY! Praise God! Many things in the Word seem almost at odds with each other, and I seem to discover more of them the more I study. My belief and hope is that I am being led by the Holy spirit to delve into the Word of God to know him more intimately, and so that He can enhance His relationship with me by leading me thus. I think about the "elect" as water in the bottom of the well, water that cannot of it's own accord traverse the sides of the well until reaching the top and release itself from the depths. However, when our Father lowers the bucket and fills it and draws it up from the depths we are exposed to the light of His creation. Further He loses not even one drop of what He intended to raise up. For those drops, pints, quarts or gallons of water left behind, my prayers still go out to Him, asking that His will be done and if it is His will to raise up more of the deep waters to be used by Him at the surface then let it be done. Additionally, I emplore Him in prayer to use me to refresh and to quench whatever or whomever thirsts at the surface, AS HE SEES FIT. Praise be to the Living God and to my Savior and Lord Jesus Christ |
