Bible Question:
What do you think only begotten refers to in John 3:16. And in Matthew 27:46, what do you think Jesus meant when he said in a loud voice, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" and whom do you think he was speaking to? I capitalized Thou because that is how it is written in my bible. |
Bible Answer: "only begotten" refers to the fact that Jesus always existed, he was not created as we have been created by God. God was always Father, Son and Holy Spirit. John 8:58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" The expression "I am" is the same used by God to Moses in Exodus 3:14 and in many places in in Isaiah. It denotes his eternal nature, the fact that he has always existed. The Nicene Creed sums it up nicely. I believe in one God, Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages, Light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one essence with the Father, through him all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man, And was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried, And rose on the third day according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father, And He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father, Who together with the Father and the Son, is worshipped and glorified, and Who spoke through the Prophets. In one Holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I expect the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come. Amen. |
