Bible Question:
In John 3:16 It states that GOd sent His only begotten son. The word begotten which means the only son from God .However there 's a multitude of verses which seem to tell that God has many, many sons. If Jesus is the only begotten son of God, how come he begotten David, how come Israel is His firstborn or Soloman? I pray that you can enlighten me from this view. God Bless! |
Bible Answer: Greetings May-it! "..The words "only begotten" do not mean that Christ was created (as the ancient heretic Arius taught), but rather means "unique" or "one of a kind." Reformed scholar Benjamin Warfield comments: "The adjective 'only begotten' conveys the idea, not of derivation and subordination, but of uniqueness and consubstantiality: Jesus is all that God is, and He alone is this." Jesus is the "Son of God" in the sense that He has the same nature as the Father- a divine nature. Whenever Christ claimed to be the Son of God in the New Testament, His Jewish critics tried to stone Him because they correctly understood Him as claiming to be God (see John 5:18)." (1) I pray that this little excerpt aids in clearing up "only begotten Son." Blessings to you, Makarios (1) "The Complete Book of Bible Answers", 1997, Ron Rhodes, Harvest House Publishers |
