Subject: Are we ever "worthy" of God's love? |
Bible Note: Dear NewLump, I would like to touch on 2 Peter 2:9 which is often used to support the arminian doctrine that salvation is in the hands of man (the idea that we choose Christ rather than His choosing us). Context is key in understanding this verse. To whom is Paul speaking? When he speaks of the mockers he uses the 3rd person "their" but he addresses his audience as "beloved" and "you". therfore we could restate verse 9 this way: 2 Pet 3:9 "The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any of YOU to perish but for all of YOU to come to repentance. It is also important to note that the topic is the return of Jesus and not salvation. Once a person has a true appreciation of the fallen nature of mankind his view of salvation will be radically affected. I strongly urge you to read "The Reformed Faith" by Lorraine Boetttner.
