Bible Question: With reference to this verse -Is it wrong to use the church for a breakfast meeting or for the sale of religious books. Our ladies group is planning a breakfast meeting and I was asked to handle the book table but I am not sure if this has God's approval. |
Bible Answer: Hi, mega. Thanks for your question. The context of this account and of a similiar one in the Synoptics suggests that the animal merchants and the money changers were giving full vent to their greed, engaging in what we call today "price gouging" at the expense of the Jewish pilgrims who had come to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. It was this deplorable activity that brought down the wrath of our Lord upon these mercenaries. Whether your ladies' group breakfast and book table rises to the level of that which Jesus condemned is for you to decide, but I hardly think it does. I am a member of a very conservative church and it is not unusual for it to offer Bibles and certain other "religious" books for sale from time to time, often at a reduced price. If anyone wants a Bible and hasn't the money to pay for it, we give it to them. I wouldn't call that price gouging! --Hank |
