NASB | John 19:31 ¶ Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 19:31 ¶ Since it was the day of Preparation [for the Sabbath], in order to prevent the bodies from hanging on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high holy day) the Jews asked Pilate to have their legs broken [to hasten death] and the bodies taken away. |
Subject: EdB, Did He die on Thursday? |
Bible Note: Hello again Steve. The passage indicated, John 19:31, does not specifically state which day, such as "Thursday" or "Friday", and we have to look at this viewing the Jewish days and customs that signified this time. I apologize Steve for my crudeness and 'acute insensitiveness', but for the past two days I have been angry with you. You and EdB bring up some very good points on this issue of whether He was crucified on Thursday instead of Friday, and I am planning on seeing a friend of mine (who is a Messianic Jew) tomorrow and I will ask him specifically about this. Whatever he says, I will probably go with, since I trust this fellow. I will post his response after I speak with him. I could be wrong, yes, but this is not a major issue that effects anyone's salvation. If I am wrong on this issue, from what my friend states, then he will be going against the 'better judgment' of all the commentaries and sources of Biblical information that I have. But I will be consigned to his answer, since I trust him as a personal friend and one with much wisdom. I am not a "Pharisee" and remain a student of the Bible with a teachable spirit. I will post what he says after our visit tomorrow. Stay tuned. :) |
