Bible Note: Johnny: I heartily encourage you, my brother, to read Romans 9 concerning your question. Paul quotes two Old Testament prophets in the latter half of that chapter to establish the Spirit's point. In His reference to Hosea, God shows that His salvation plan includes not only Jews, but also Gentiles. When Paul quotes Isaiah, it is revealed that God's promises were never to EVERY Israelite in the first place, but rather a "remnant" among them: 'Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, "THOUGH THE NUMBER OF THE SONS OF ISRAEL BE LIKE THE SAND OF THE SEA, IT IS THE REMNANT THAT WILL BE SAVED; FOR THE LORD WILL EXECUTE HIS WORD ON THE EARTH, THOROUGHLY AND QUICKLY." And just as Isaiah foretold, "UNLESS THE LORD OF SABAOTH HAD LEFT TO US A POSTERITY, WE WOULD HAVE BECOME LIKE SODOM, AND WOULD HAVE RESEMBLED GOMORRAH."' -Romans 9:27-29 God's people are recipients of His everlasting promises, and God will not go back on His promises. But not every Jew is one of God's people. That is what the very word "remnant" means. In the Old Testament God's elect people were AMONG the Jews. Now they are AMONG the Jews and Gentiles. Obviously, for the time being, there are many more Gentiles on the earth among God's people, but there are strong indications in Scripture that this is a temporary situation (Luke 21:24; Romans 11:25). It seems that God in the future will raise up a larger remnant among the Jews, faithful to Jesus Christ. But it is always a REMNANT of Israel that numbers among the people of God. --Joe! |
