Subject: One God- Three manifestations |
Bible Note: Hello bob r. OK, let's stick to Scripture. That's proper. Neither of us disagrees with the divinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, only on whether these are three persons or one person representing Himself in different ways. Let's look at the OT. 1. Each of the following has the Lord God speaking and using both plural and singular pronouns of Himself. Genesis 1:26-27 (ESV) Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…" So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 3:22-24 (ESV) Then the Lord God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil…." therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden… He drove out the man. Isaiah 6:8 (ESV) And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" ----------------- 2. There are Scriptures that have God referring to another as God or Lord. Psalm 45:6-7 (ESV) Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; [7] you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions. Psalm 110:1 (ESV) The Lord says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool." Malachi 3:1 (ESV) "Behold, I send my messenger and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. Hosea 1:7 (ESV) But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God. I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen." ----------------- 3. The Holy Spirit is spoken of as distinct from God. Isaiah 48:16 (ESV) Draw near to me, hear this: from the beginning I have not spoken in secret, from the time it came to be I have been there." And now the Lord God has sent me, and his Spirit. Isaiah 61:1 (ESV) The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; Isaiah 63:10 (ESV) But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; therefore he turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them. ----------------- 4. An angel is a messenger of God, therefore distinct from God. Yet the Angel of the Lord is called God. Genesis 16:13; Exodus 3:2-6; 23:20-22; Numbers 22:35,38; Judges 2:1-2; 6:11,14) ----------------- These may not prove conclusive to you. If you want to discuss NT proofs or other pertinent items, I'd be happy to oblige. Steve |
