Bible Question:
Dear Nolan, If you believed in Holy Trinity could please explain these verses John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. John 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: John 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. Matthew 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. are they truly equal? Johnny |
Bible Answer: Johnny, let me give an answer. John has shown Jesus claimed His equality with the Father (1:1, 18; 5:16-18; 10:30; 20:28) as well as His dependence on the Father (4:34; 5:19-30; 8:29; 12:48-49). There are three thoughts: -Jesus is a lesser God (known as Arian heresy). But, this does not make sense in light of Jewish thought that "God is one". Plus, this would contratict what John has said elsewhere. -Another choice is that the Father exists in heaven in complete power and glory, while Jesus was then living on earth in relative humility and obscurity. This does not justice to the context, to John's theology and its context in Judaism. -The third explanation is there is organization in the Godhead. In the Jewish culture, an adult son was equal in stature, but the father still had authority over the son. I would chose the latter. I also know that Jesus emptied Himself when He became a human (Php 2:6-8) and was a little lower than the angels (Heb 2:7, Psa 8:5). But, it did not diminish |
