NASB | John 13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 13:1 Now before the Passover Feast, Jesus knew that His hour had come [and it was time] for Him to leave this world and return to the Father. Having [greatly] loved His own who were in the world, He loved them [and continuously loves them with His perfect love] to the end (eternally). |
Bible Question:
The three synoptic gospels have Jesus eating the Passover (Matthew 26:17-21, Mark 14:12-16, Luke 22:7-13) then being crucified. According to John, Jesus was crucified and slain at the same hour as the Passover lambs (John 13:1-2, John19:14,31). How is it that they can be different - either Jesus ate the last Passover with His disciples and was crucified the next day, or He was crucified during the preparation of the Passover? Thank you, Eugene |
Bible Answer: Greetings Keiko! There is much disagreement over this question. Dr. A. T. Robertson says of John 13:1: "Joh 13:1 - Now before the feast of the passover - Just before, John means, not twenty-four hours before, that is our Thursday evening (beginning of 15th of Nisan, sunset to sunset Jewish day), since Jesus was crucified on Friday 15th of Nisan. Hence Jesus ate the regular passover meal at the usual time. The whole feast, including the feast of unleavened bread, lasted eight days. For a discussion of the objections to this interpretation of John in connexion with the Synoptic Gospels one may consult my Harmony of the Gospels, pp. 279-84, and David Smith’s In the Days of His Flesh, Appendix VIII. The passover feast began on the 15th Nisan at sunset, the passover lamb being slain the afternoon of 14th Nisan. There seems no real doubt that this meal in John 13:1-30 is the real passover meal described by the Synoptics also (Mar_14:18-21; Mat_26:21-25; Luk_22:21-23), followed by the institution of the Lord’s Supper. Thus understood Joh_13:1 here serves as an introduction to the great esoteric teaching of Christ to the apostles (John 13:2-17:26), called by Barnas Sears The Heart of Christ." But, Barnes writes: "Thus, it is said a difference arose between them about the time of the Passover, and that Jesus kept it one day sooner than most of the people. The foundation of the opinion that he anticipated the usual time of keeping the Passover is the following: 1. In Joh_18:28, it is said that on the day on which our Lord was crucified, and of course the day after he had eaten the Passover, the chief priests would not go into the judgment-hall lest they should be defiled, “but that they might eat the passover,” evidently meaning that it was to be eaten that day. 2. In Joh_19:14, the day on which he was crucified is called “the preparation of the passover” - that is, the day on which it was prepared to be eaten in the evening. 3. In Joh_19:31, the day in which our Lord lay in the grave was called the great day of the Sabbath - “a high day;” that is, the day after the Passover was killed, the Sabbath occurring on the first day of the feast properly, and therefore a day of special solemnity; yet our Saviour had partaken of it two days before, and therefore the day before the body of the people. If this opinion be true, then the phrase “my time is at hand means my time for keeping the Passover is near. " Allow me to continue in the next post! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
