Bible Question: what does the darkness refer to? |
Bible Answer: John is using figurative speech here. The Lord Jesus is the Light. "A metaphor is an implied comparison between two things which are different...." " An example is John 6:48 where the Lord Jesus says, "I am the bread of life." Looking at John 1:4 "In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men." Then look at John 1:12 "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, John 1:13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God." Looking at John 1:10 "He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. John 1:11 He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him." Therefore those who did not receive Him are still in darkness. I would say darkness in this context is the world system that is under Satan's control. Eph 2:1 "And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, Eph 2:2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience." The Lord Jesus came to rescue us and deliver us out of the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. Reading on in John you see that John admonishes us to walk as children of light not as children of darkness. |
