Bible Question:
I am a world bible school teacher and I had one of my students ask me the following question: The bible says, Moses said he saw God face to face in Genesis and in the book of John 1:18 he says no one has ever seen God.Is there any contradiction in this two statements. please, help to explain this to me. May God help you in all you do. Please help me in answering him. I will also do my own study but I wanted to get some second opinions. Thanks so much. In Christ, Nicky Bob |
Bible Answer: You know, if your students are anything like mine, you're also going to have to deal with Jacob who claimed to have seen God face to face. In Jacob's case however; he had wrestled an angel. In Moses' case, I've always understood that to be a figure of speach. Like buddy to buddy; pal to pal; man to man, like that. God spoke to Moses as one friend would to another. Exodus 33:11(ICB)The lord spoke to Moses face to face as a man speakes with his friend..... Continue to read down to the 18th verse, "Then Moses said, 'Now please show me your greatness'. 19)The Lord answered, 'I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you. I will announce my name, the Lord, so you can hear it. I will show kindness to anyone I want to show kindness. I will show mercy to anyone I want to show mercy. But you cannot see my face. No one can see me and stay alive'" Moses managed to get out of the tent alive and relay the story. Therefore it would be safe to assume that he did not see God face to face. Spoke to God face to face yes, but scripture doesn't say that no man has spoken to God, it says that no man has seen God. |
