NASB | John 1:14 ¶ And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 1:14 ¶ And the Word (Christ) became flesh, and lived among us; and we [actually] saw His glory, glory as belongs to the [One and] only begotten Son of the Father, [the Son who is truly unique, the only One of His kind, who is] full of grace and truth (absolutely free of deception). [Is 40:5] |
Bible Question: Jesus' Character - Grace and Truth: This passage says that Jesus was full of "grace and truth". I have been wrassling with the idea that the sum of Jesus' character was another way of saying "grace" or "truth". I have been trying to find a Biblical example that departs from this idea ... if there is one? |
Bible Answer: Dear InAwe, Jesus being "the fulness" of grace and truth can maybe better understood as Him embodying the complete fulness of both grace and truth. As Marvin Vincent notes: Full of grace and truth (pleres charitos kai aletheias). This is connected with the main subject of the sentence: “The Word — full of grace and truth.” A common combination in the Old Testament (see Gen. 24:27, 49; 32:10; Exod. 34:6; Ps. 40:10, 11; 61:7). In these two words the character of the divine revelation is summed up. “Grace corresponds with the idea of the revelation of God as Love (1 John 4:8, 16) by Him who is Life; and Truth with that of the revelation of God as Light (1 John 1:5) by Him who is Himself Light” (Westcott). Compare ver. 17. On Grace, see on Luke 1:30. I don't completely understand the last part of your question, but I don't believe there is an example that departs? Maybe you could clarify? I hope this helps, BradK |
