Bible Question:
In Mathew 5:3 says Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven and in Luke 6:20 says Blessed are the poor for theirs is the kingdom of. Why Luke 6:20 they ommited the word siprit |
Bible Answer: Luke 6:1 Now it happened that He was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath; and His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the grain. When we ask the question who was Jesus talking to in Luke 6:20, we see He was talking to His disciples. To determine if Jesus is talking to the crowd or his disciples, read the verses surrounding verse 20. When we read verse one we see the disciples were hungry and eating grain on the sabbath. Verse 16 explains that Judas became a traitor. The conclusion I draw from this passage is Jesus was speaking specifically to His disciples. In Matthew 5:3 we see that Jesus went to a mountain to speak. The verse says He was speaking there to the crowd that had gathered and His disciples. He says blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven - we would need to search cross references to see what it means to be poor in spirit. This is something that is addressed to a different audience than what is addressed in Luke 6:20. In conclusion Jesus is talking about two different subjects. That is why both verses are not the same. |
