Bible Note: Dear Andrew, Very well said, succinct, not at all convoluted as far as I could tell. If I may add though, since the Pharisees believed rightly that only God could forgive sin and most probably understanding only He could heal palsy as well, thus, I believe it was equally easy for Jesus, the God-Man, to say with impunity (though He would ultimately pay the price) both, and impossible for a mere-man to say either, thus, most brilliantly and emphatically demonstrating axiom proof, He was God and able not only say but do, both.
