Bible Note: Hi, Jalek... Yes, your interpretation of that phrase in the Apostles Creed is not an uncommon one. Indeed, I tend to agree with it, for our Lord's last words on the cross were “Consummatum est” -- it is complete (John 19:30). Nonetheless, Lockman has established a Study Bible Forum, not a Study Jalek/Doc Forum. You see, the people that come to forum have one common interest, and that is the Scriptures. On occasion they may ask about a particular doctrine, with “What do you believe?” Those kinds of questions are particularly easy to identify since the poster will write something right along the lines of “What do you believe?” Contrariwise, Anita came to us and asked a very different question: “Where are the Scriptures that speak to this?” Now we are fortunate that Christians have been discussing the phrase “descended into hell” in the Apostles Creed for over two thousand years. You see, “for this has not been done in a corner.” Hence, with but a tiny bit of effort we can actually provide Anita with the answer to her original question. The benefit of that will be at least two fold: (1) We affirm and encourage her fundamental belief that Scripture is the source of truth (2 Timothy 3:16-17); and (2) we avoid impeding the work of the Holy Spirit through the Word (2 Peter 1:20-21). Perhaps in subsequent posts Anita or others may ask, “What does Jalek believe?” “What does Doc believe?” or “What transmogrification of Jewish belief have you?” I daresay that we'll be more readily able to answer those questions with impunity. Thank you for the correction of the seventh reference. It should be Psalm 24:7 – one of the verses that was cited by Medieval scholars in association with this topic. There is a Deuteronomical reference in Ecclesiasticus, but I didn't think that it would be of any real value. Finally, thank you for the opportunity for us all to explicitly reaffirm and discuss the commitment we have for the Terms of Use. In Him, Doc |
