Bible Note: Hi, Jalek... Our gracious host, the Lockman Foundation, has us agree to the Terms of Use as part of our registration. Furthermore, each time we post, we are reaffirming our agreement with the Terms of Use, before God, Lockman, our fellow participants, and our readers. One of the statements therein is an expression of commitment to Biblical Christian doctrine, which is further defined, in part, by the Apostles Creed. Therein is a statement of one of our most fundamental tenants, that “Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell. On the third day He rose again; He ascended into heaven, He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and He will come to judge the living and the dead.” The phrase in question is “He descended into hell.” That phrase is said to be based on seven biblical passages: Ephesians 4:9; Acts 2:24; 1 Peter 3:19; Hosea 13:14; Zechariah 9:11; Colossians 2:15; Psalm 23:7. Consequently, there is no doubt, in orthodox Christianity, that our Lord descended into hell. With our continued posting in the forum, we all avow and affirm this. We may well ask in what way Christ “descended into hell,” the purpose for which He did so, the nature of this incident, the purpose of this aspect of the atonement, what it accomplished, and what our Lord experienced. These are some of the questions that Anita is asking. In Him, Doc |
