Bible Question: Last week I was told that if you were not baptized then your name would not be put in the Lamb's Book of Life and you would not go to Heaven. Even if you were saved. Please help. I am very confused now. I have been saved and baptized, but I have friends that even though they are saved, have not been baptized. What do I say to the person who has given me this information? Are they right? |
Bible Answer: Dear mel2000, Whoever told you that you must be baptized by water in order to be saved is totally and completely wrong!! Yes, yes, Mark 16:16 does say, "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved.." But in no way is this verse saying that 'baptism' is a requirement for salvation, since it continues in this way, "but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned." If Mark 16:16 were saying that 'baptism' was a prerequisite for salvation, then Jesus would have also said "but he who has disbelieved and 'not been baptized' shall be condemned." Jesus never said that, he only said that the 'unbelievers' will be condemned, not those who had never been baptised. Also, Luke 7:50 says, "And He said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace." John 10:9 says, "I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture." Acts 16:30-31 states, "and after he brought them out, he said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." Romans 10:9, "that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;" Romans 10:13, "for WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED." Mel2000, the next time you see your friends who tell you that "you must be baptized in order to be saved", then you can show them using these very verses that they are wrong! You can ask them where in the Bible that baptism is shown to be a 'requirement' for salvation. Water baptism is a public 'declaration' of the 'inner baptism' that has taken place within your soul by the Holy Spirit! Certainly, we must be 'born again' and be baptized by the Holy Spirit before we inherit salvation. But both of these things, being 'born again' and being 'baptized by the Holy Spirit', occur at salvation- when a person receives Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior! Water baptism takes place in some church or by a river and is totally 'set up' by man. Salvation is a 'spontaneous' occurrence of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit does not act on any time frame that man 'sets up'. Baptism by fire occurs at the moment of salvation, and water baptism is not a requirement for salvation. If your friends do not agree with you, then you can rest assured that you are correct in thinking that you do not have to be baptized by water in order to inherit eternal life and to have your name written in the Lamb's Book of Life, my friend! :) Nolan |
