Bible Question:
Thanks for the info. :) The reason I asked this question is because I have been having a bit of a debate with a Preterist. He takes this verse as meaning that if Jesus did not come within that generation (as in 70 A.D.) then God is a liar. I have always taken this verse to either mean the nation of Israel, or perhaps the kingdom of God. Do you have any thoughts? P.S. I plan on getting a word study book for the Bible. Thanks. |
Bible Answer: To be quite honest this Generation think is debatable, and many fine Christians have strong evidence for either side. I cab sit in the middle and I can understand both sides. Infact I could defend either side in a debate. I think is how one interprets Scripture. I am a creationist, and do not believe in the JEPD theory of Genesis. To my way of understanding Scripture is, how you believe the begining is how you will understand Revelation. That determines how you understand the rest of the Bible. I find Premillennialism is the better way to interpret scripture. I find more Amillennialist take a liberal view of scripture, would believe in the JEPD theory and try to alogoirize scripture, that I would take more litteral. Usually for most amilennialist they would see AD 70 as completing that Generation you are refering to. May I suggest THE MEANING OF THE MILLENNIUM FOUR VIEWS edited by Robert G. Clouse published by InterVarsity Press. This is in print and easy to get or order. Infact I got one for our Pastor recently. Also THINGS TO COME by J. Dwight Pentecost by Zondervan. Pentecost also has THE WORDS AND WORKS OF JESUS CHRIST, and A HARMONY OF THE WORDS AND WORKS OF JESUS CHRIST. All three books are so easy reading and a mainstay for a good library for Christians. I really enjot the Harmony. The issue you are dealing with is solid meat, and make sure you have teeth to chew this prime rib of the Word. You are in some good dialogue material that will strech your growth. I would caution you don't get so defensive that it becomes a challenge to show weakness in a nother believer. I know where I stand. I love to hear others view. If I listen to the other person, but because they feel I am so wrong, they won't listen to my view, I am the wiser, not them. If both of you listen to each other then you both have learned and grown in understanding at least. The thing that amazes me, the Bible is about 1100 pages from cover to cover. Yet there are billions of pages of mans writings trying to explain it's every little detail. A little odd is it not? I hope you enjoy your study, and perhaps I have helped a little. agape, justme |
