Bible Question (short): Tithing sermons |
Question (full): I recently heard an evangelist preach on tithing. I know there are debates whether we as Christians are required to tithe. I understand we are under the New Testament Law and that it does not directly tell us to give 10 percent or any other amount. If I am wrong on this, please someone set me straight. The problem that I have is that the evangelist made it sound like you were robbing God is we did not tithe 10 percent, before taxes etc. and that your offerings were anything above 10 percent. He cited a bunch of numbers about how many people actually tithe in the church and all the benefits that could come if the entire church tithed 10 percent plus an additional offering. I don’t doubt for a second that the majority of people do not tithe. Personally, I do tithe and don’t think twice about doing so. I know I am making this to long, but the problem is this. He gave a bunch of examples of people that he knew that started tithing and all of a sudden they started reaping the benefits. I.e. Check showing up in the mail out of the blew, person comes to the door and gives them a gift, a person’s business suddenly takes off and the money starts rolling in. Are you following me???? I felt bad for the Christians in the pew’s that might not know any better and view tithing as an “Investment”. Am I off base???? Is this type of sermon common today? |
