Bible Question:
Do you try to find what it actually means? What Does That Verse Mean To You? '...There are times when certain scriptures are difficult to understand and that our opinions on these verses might be equally valid. If they contradict each other, they cannot all be valid. Furthermore, I pointed out that we must not subject God's word to our opinions. It is a mistake to have a group of people look at a Scripture and offer varying opinions on what it means as though God's word means only what it means to us at that time and that we can contradict each other and that's fine. Instead, we should ask ourselves "what does a text SAY?" We should work hard at trying to discover what the best single possible meaning to the text is -- if that is applicable. We should not view God's word as a well from which we draw whatever feeling, sensation, or opinion that suits us for the time. Instead, we must do our best to find out what the word actually says to the best of our ability instead of "feeling" our way through the scriptures using relativism as a guide. Otherwise, we would be saying that God does not actually mean anything specific when He inspired the writers of the Bible. If we were to say that God's word can mean different things, then the word of God doesn't mean anything at all. The problem here is that relativism [is] creeping into the Bible study. (...) So I ask you. When you study God's word devotionally, or otherwise, do you hope to find what it actually means so you can subject yourself to what it says, or do you try and find a meaning for Scripture that suits your needs, your feelings, and your desires? Bible Answer: I know that some questions do not have only one answer. I read scriptures about a particular topic that to me are so plain in context not only of the passage but in combination with all other passages on the topic. And yet I consistently here or read those that use words like "what doe the text Say" explain something the text does not say. Often men who say they only go by what the Word says, say they believe something the Word does not say. The word does not say it but they beleive that is the interpretation of a certain subject. When presented with scripture only and asked to imagine that they had never been to church or heard any teaching on religion and they were cast on a desert island and had only the bible and read it, What does logic suggest they would think at first reading when they read a certain passage, if they are willing to be honest with themselves they will confess that at first reading they would think something that is not what their denomination beleives. But then they quickly add that as they studied the whole bible they would concluded otherwise. But maybe not. Maybe their "conclusion" is not based on studying the whole bible but on years of being taught what the Bible means. It is a good question and I think that the answer is given in the teachings of Christ. Jesus often explained that having understanding in the spiritual things of God or the Kingdom of Heaven is directly related to our heart response toward honest repentance and submission to God. There must be a willingness to admit we are wrong and God's way is best even if it means we will be kicked out of our denomination if we believe it. Only then will we be given more light. But if faced with what in our hearts we know to be probably the correct interpretation of the clear word for word text we decide to side with a denominational teaching that we think might be the wrong one..we stop the light at that point and will not be able to really move on with God in the true spiritual things He wants to show us, until we deal with that error. We can be saved, and if that is all we care about then we will not try to clear it up. But the spiritual man will feel a sense of nagging suspicion that he is not siding with the Lord and it will drive him to his knees and his heart will cry out for knowledge and thirst for the truth, and the Lord will be faithful to give it to him. But many do not cry out nor thirst with fervency and God does not owe it to them to reveal it. It is easy to read a passage and give your opinion. No man has to seek knock and ask for that. It is no wonder that there are so many that do not agree, when there are so many that do not seek. Seek for it as hid treasure said the writer of Proverbs and we glance at it between coffee cups and the morning news. But those that seek out the truth with a heart cry of hunger and faith that will not be denied until they awake in His likness will come away in agreement with one another. God Bless You as you study His Word. |
